04 FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions, Solar Installer Central Coast

How much does solar cost on the Central Coast?

Solar system cost depends on system size, brand of panels and inverter, your roof type, and whether you include a battery. Every home is different, a small system for a single-person household is a very different job to a large family home with a pool. Rather than quoting a generic number, we prefer to look at your power bill, roof, and goals, then give you an honest quote with real numbers. Australian solar rebates (STCs) also reduce the upfront cost significantly.

What size solar system do I need for my Central Coast home?

The right system size depends on how much electricity you use, when you use it, whether you're planning a battery or EV, and how much roof space you have. A small home with modest power use needs a smaller system than a family home with air con, pool pumps, and EV charging. We size every system properly, oversizing wastes money, undersizing leaves you importing expensive grid power.

Are you SAA accredited?

Yes. We're accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA), the national body that oversees all solar and battery installers in Australia since 2024. SAA accreditation is a legal requirement to install solar systems eligible for government rebates (STCs). Our installers hold full SAA accreditation for grid-connected solar (GCPV) and battery systems (GCBS), and we only install CEC-approved panels, inverters, and batteries.

Do I need council approval for solar panels in NSW?

Most standard rooftop solar installations on the Central Coast don't need council approval, they fall under NSW's Exempt Development rules. However, there are exceptions: heritage-listed properties, homes in conservation areas, and some specific building types may need approval. Council approval is separate from the approvals we handle on your behalf (network connection, safety certification, rebate paperwork). We check your property type before installation to confirm.

How long does a solar installation take?

The physical install on your roof usually takes a day or two, depending on system size and complexity. However, the full process from initial quote to power generation includes site assessment, system design, network approval (from the local electricity provider), installation, then final meter reconfiguration and inspection. Timeframes vary depending on network approval queues. We'll give you a realistic timeline upfront so there are no surprises.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

In most cases, yes. If your existing inverter is hybrid-ready or AC-coupled, adding a battery is relatively straightforward. If you have an older string inverter that isn't battery-compatible, you may need an inverter upgrade or an AC-coupled battery with its own inverter. We'll inspect your existing setup, check compatibility, and recommend the most cost-effective path. Popular retrofit batteries include Tesla Powerwall, Sungrow, and BYD.

Which solar brands do you install?

For solar panels we install brands like Trina Solar. For batteries we install Tesla Powerwall, Sungrow, and BYD. For inverters we work with Sungrow and other leading CEC-approved brands. We don't lock you into one brand, if you have a preference or want advice on what suits your situation, just ask and we'll explain your options honestly.

How do I claim the solar rebate in NSW?

The main rebate is the federal STC scheme (Small-scale Technology Certificates), which reduces the upfront cost of your system. The good news, you don't need to claim it yourself. We handle the STC paperwork and the rebate is applied directly to your quoted price, so you see the lower net cost from the start. NSW also offers additional rebates for batteries and low-income households, which we can walk you through if eligible.

Do I need to clean my solar panels?

In most cases, no, Central Coast rainfall usually keeps panels clean enough to perform at their best. However, panels under heavy tree cover, near busy roads, or with bird droppings may benefit from an occasional professional clean. Avoid hosing panels yourself in hot weather (thermal shock can damage glass) and never walk on panels. We offer optional solar maintenance and cleaning as part of our health-check service if needed.

How long do solar panels last?

Quality solar panels are designed to last 25 years or more, with most manufacturers offering long product and performance warranties (see the warranty question below for specifics on the brands we install). In practice, many panels continue working well beyond their warranty period at slightly reduced output. Inverters generally have shorter lifespans than panels and are designed to be replaced or extended under warranty mid-system. Choosing quality brands and a proper installation makes a big difference to long-term performance.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days on the Central Coast?

Yes, solar panels still generate electricity on cloudy days, though output is reduced compared to clear sunny conditions. The Central Coast gets good year-round sunshine, and modern panels produce meaningful power even under light cloud cover. Over a whole year, cloudy days average out and systems deliver predictable total output. A battery can also help by storing sunny-day surplus for use on cloudier days.

Can I get solar on a tiled roof?

Yes, tiled roofs are common on the Central Coast and we install on them regularly. We use specialised tile-compatible mounting systems that keep the roof watertight and maintain the tile warranty. Some older or brittle tiles may need replacement in the install area, and we'll flag this during the site assessment. Metal roofs (Colorbond) are slightly faster and cheaper to install on, but tiled roofs are a completely normal solar install.

What size battery do I need for my home?

Battery sizing depends on how much power you use in the evening (when solar isn't generating), whether you want backup power during outages, and your budget. A battery sized to cover just evening usage is smaller and cheaper than one sized for full energy independence. Most Central Coast homes benefit from a medium-sized battery paired with a right-sized solar system. We'll look at your usage pattern and recommend the best fit, no upselling.

Can solar really save me money?

Yes, but how much depends on your system size, your power use, the price of electricity, and your tariff. For most Central Coast homes, solar reduces electricity bills significantly from day one, and the system typically pays itself off over a few years. Adding a battery or EV charger changes the maths (bigger savings, longer payback). We'll give you honest numbers based on your actual bill, no inflated savings projections.

Do you install EV chargers with solar systems?

Yes, we install EV chargers as standalone jobs or bundled with solar and battery installations. Pairing an EV charger with solar means you can charge your car for free during the day from your own solar generation. We install leading brands including Tesla Wall Connector, Fronius Wattpilot, and other CEC-approved units. If you're getting solar and considering an EV in the next few years, it's worth planning the charger install now.

What warranty do your solar systems come with?

Every system we install comes with three layers of warranty. The Trina Solar panels we install carry a product warranty of up to 25 years (depending on the specific model) plus a separate performance warranty. Fronius inverters come with a standard manufacturer warranty, and when registered on Fronius Solar.web during installation, eligible systems currently qualify for an extended warranty of up to 10 years at no extra cost. Batteries carry their own manufacturer warranty (brand-dependent). On top of the manufacturer warranties, we provide a workmanship warranty on our installation. We'll confirm the exact warranty terms for your specific system before you commit.
